Production: Editing

In the editing sessions we continued to put together our short film, but we were running out of footage. I suggested the idea of having a voiceover of one of the little girls as an adult, recalling an old memory. We spent a lesson seeing if we had enough footage for the film to make sense without it, but we didn't have enough, so we started to plan the voiceover.

This is the plan for the voiceover so far, however, it still needs to be written:

  • Moving out of home and in with boyfriend
  • Came across old toys
  • Found dolls
  • Brought back memory of the park
  • She went with mum + sister
  • Fed ducks
  • Went to find a bench to sit on

[FILM SOUND COMES IN AND VOICEOVER QUIETENS]

  • Her memories get fuzzy during the out-of-focus shots (can deliberately make them blurrier)
  • Although her memories get fuzzy, there is one thing she can’t forget. She doesn’t say it.
  • She gets distracted by the phone call. “anyway, mum got a phone call....”
  • The sound comes back in for the phone ringing
  • The voiceover comes back to explain that her and her sister were making the dolls fight about silly things

[THE 'I HATE YOU, I HATE YOU...' CLIP COMES IN]

  • The voiceover finally explains things by saying “that’s what it was like at home”
  • Her and her sister didn’t realise it wasn’t a normal thing for parents to fight , until they grew up a bit

[SHOT OF THE MUM FINISHING ON THE PHONE, SAYING THEY HAVE TO GO]

  • Voiceover says how the black eye was the thing she couldn’t forget, and then mentions that she is in the same situation as her mum.
We will record two voiceovers for the ending. In one, it will be implied that the mum died. In the other, it will be implied that she’s alive still

We have decided that we would like to add a couple more scenes as well as a voiceover. We don't want the scenes to look fancy, as the character will be an adult version of one of the little girls who will be moving out of her house, and moving in with her boyfriend. We are hoping to be able to film in one of the media rooms, or just an empty room in school. The only props we will need are some cardboard boxes and the original dolls from the first filming session. I asked at reception if the school keeps any of the boxes that they get, and I was told that we were free to use any of the boxes we could find in or around the recycle bin area.
