Darling Darling and Matthew Lessner

Darling Darling is a 2005 short film directed by Matthew Lessner. It stars Michael Cera, an actor who is becoming very mainstream having appeared in such films as Juno, Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist and most recently, the films adaption of Scott Pilgrim vs the World.

It is about a boy, Harold, who is doing his best to make a good first impression to his prom dates one-of-a-kind father, against a series of surreal, bizarre events.

it has been shown at a number of film festivals including Sarajevo Film Festival, Florida Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival and Montreal World Short Film Series.

  • Matthew Lessner is an independent award-winning filmmaker working in New York City and Los Angeles.
  • His directorial debut was the 2005 short film Darling Darling starring Michael Cera, which screened at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, Comedia, and the Ann Arbor Film Festival where Lessner won the Tom Berman Most Promising Filmmaker Award.
  • Lessner's second film, 'By Modern Measure', premiered at South by Southwest and also screened at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival
  • Both of Lessner's short films, 'Darling Darling' and 'By Modern Measure', are completely different. I found it difficult to understand what his style was, apart from comedic and arty. I find his style to be kind of 'arty' because 'Darling Darling' is really crazy, it uses a lot of colour and things that don't really need to be used (such as props) to show its obscurity. 'By Modern Measure' is completely different in the sense that there is no real colour, it is in black and white. The film itself pays homage to French Avant Garde films, it even has French narration, but it is telling a modern love story. It reminds me of historical anachronisms, not literally, but in the sense that the story is very modern and shouldn't have existed in the time it is seemingly set in.
