Confined

The director useds slow, sweeping movements to portray the mood of this short film. I think this works well because it makes the film seem professional, well-planned and the shots fitt together nicely. The story that the film has is simple, yet a little bit cryptic because the scenes get confusing towards the middle. There is a clear equilibrium as it starts with the male character being cooped up in his room (and a shot of his belongings, letting the audience know that it is his room). The audience find out that he is scared to leave the house because he was a victim of street violence, and scenes are shown from the fight he was in. He obviously wants to go out - as the camera peds from bottom to top of the door, to show it fully - but he doesn't. Instead he ends up getting bored and watching people out of his window. I think he tries to imagine their lives, and what it is that they are scared of. The film cuts from high angle shots of the people he is looking at, to scenes which show what he thinks they are afraid of. Including a young girl seemingly afraid of scary clowns. This links with he fact that the whole video is based around his fear of his attackers. One of the people he sees from the window happens to be one of the boys who attacked him, who he imagines to be full of fear just like himself. This is what gives him the courage to finally leave his room, following the realisation that everybody has fears, but many choose to live their lives despite this. Throughout the film there is instrumental piano music which doesn't draw attention from the film, but instead seems to keep the audience fixated on it, and the story in it.
